Students will be asked to work on designing their own deck of cards. I have used it in the past and have received some really creative submissions.
An opportunity for them to practice their illustration and design generation skills.
Crossword that is aimed for KS3 students in Design and Technology. Mainly consists of tools and materials. Clues are precise and easy to understand. This activity can be used as a starter or plenary exercise to reinforce knowledge given in practical lessons. Can be projected on the board and completed collectively or printed out and used in lesson. Can also be used as part of a cover lesson.

A DT cover worksheet - No teaching required- Print or assign online.
A design challenge to really test creativity. Students are asked to design a useless invention.
The product must have a function but the function should be entirely useless. An example of this would be an ‘umbrella umbrella’ an umbrella that clips onto your umbrella to protect it from rain. A transparent t-shirt or a calendar that reads ‘today’ on every day.
Students instructed to avoid products with no function, for example, a blank set of playing cards or a cup with holes in it.
Really fun and engaging - Enjoyable to mark and return from absence to.
A worksheet designed to help KS4/5 DT students learn and revise specific tools linked to measuring and marking. The worksheet can be set as a research task.
No teaching required.
DT cover worksheet - No teaching required - print or assign online -
Students will need to design a product in each of the labeled boxes (wood, metal, plastic) that capitalizes on the distinct properties of that material. Explain why they chose each material for that design based on its unique characteristics and suitability.
A simple printout worksheet for a cover lesson.
Students are given a faint template of a superhero and asked to design their own superhero. Students will also need to draw out an emblem/logo for their hero, list their abilities and weaknesses and write a brief story explaining how their superhero gained their abilities.
The resource contains both male and female superheroes. A perfect quick printout for a emergency cover lesson.
A great challenge lesson that I use regularly with students of all ages.
The aim is to develop an understanding of structures and construction in a creative practical way. Students work as a group to build the tallest freestanding structure out of spaghetti and tape. The structure has to support the weight of the marshmallow. Students can be encouraged to take an iterative approach to building their structure by assessing the structure at intervals and building upon it.
Lesson includes a slideshow with information about the challenge and how triangulation is used in construction.
An evaluation worksheet that can be used during manufacture or at the end of the lesson as a plenary task.
A slideshow and worksheet that cover the making of an MDF spinning top. A great first mini project for KS3 students. Covers technical drawing of a Hexagon, using a Tenon saw, bench hook, pillar drill, mallet and more. Tried and tested, students love having a spin off tournament afterwards - opportunity to talk about friction, energy and rotational movement.
A Short STEAM project for KS3 students that introduces them to sustainability, renewable energy and encourages them as designers to create solutions to target global goal 11.2 : Sustainable Cities and Communities, affordable and sustainable transport.
The resource contains a 20 page slide show that has been divided into structured lessons. The resource has an accompanying project booklet which can be printed for students to work in, the booklet is editable and can be inserted into a larger booklet containing multiple projects. This is a brilliant project that I have delivered to KS3 students over the past few years and they really connect with it and enjoy building and racing their outcomes.
A great introduction to STEAM as the project follows the design process. Students will start by analysing the globals goal and exploring the design context. Students will then learn all about fossil fuels and the problems caused by their overuse, students will be introduced to renewable energy sources and then set the challenge of designing and manufacturing a wind powered car. The project includes information about forces and motion and allows students to understand these elements of physics in a practical setting.
All resources are completely editable.
A great introduction or refresher lesson on how to use 2D design. This lesson will guide students through using the most simple tools through to vectorising images from google. The lesson will help students understand why things need to be drawn a certain way in order to work with the laser cutter. The slides have been designed so that students can use them as reference to work independently. The slides can also be blown up and printed as part of a classroom display. Worksheet is editable and can be slotted into any project booklet that involves CAD.
Good first lesson to introduce students to CAD/CAM. Slide show is interactive and engaging with an accompanying worksheet. Students learn about the different software used, different machinery and the different products they can produce. Editable.
A great first lesson or a great reminder of H+S in Design and Technology - Covers health and safety in the workshop in a fun and engaging way. Powerpoint presentation accompanied by printout worksheet - can be added to the beginning of project booklets.
This resource has been designed to introduce students to CAD CAM and teach them the basics of using Google Sketchup specifically with product design in mind.
This 30 page slideshow and accompanying booklet will guide students through first understanding what CAD is and then teaching them how to use Google sketchup. The slides have step by step screenshots with written instructions that allow students to work at their own pace.
I have used this resource for the past three years and it has really helped my students learn how to use sketchup and design prototypes for their projects. My GCSE students still refer to it when creating joints or CAD modelling for their coursework.
The resource doesn’t require much teaching but will work better if the teacher can demonstrate the steps on a projected screen first. Can also be used as cover if required.
All the slides are editable.
This resource has been designed to introduce real world problems and how designers can create solutions to eliminate them. The lesson teaches exploration techniques and provides grids that the students can use. This slide can be used for students from year 7 all the way through to GCSE. The slide show and worksheets can be edited to fit any context, the lesson can be teacher led but also students can work through this on their own. The lesson concludes with students writing a design brief. Insight is given into how to write a design brief.
As DT teachers it seems that we are always teaching a lesson focussed on carrying out a product analysis. This lesson has been designed to teach KS3 and KS4 students the importance of carrying out a product analysis as well as guiding them through all of the important factors they should consider when analysing a product. The lesson and worksheet is generic and can be edited to suit all projects. The worksheet can also be included as part of a project booklet that you may be creating.
